Some of the Founding Fathers were out-and-out terrorists: Hancock, Samual Adams, that crowd. They'd storm loyalists' homes and tar and feather (aka "kill) them. Adams paid little boys to taunt the British troops in Boston and throw rocks at them until a troop finally lost it and fired on some of them: the "Boston Massacre." This was of course Adams' plan all along -- the innocent had to die for the Cause.

Given all that -- Jefferson was just preaching to the choir.

There are a fair number of Iraqis over in the San Joaquin Valley, around Modesto. I knew a guy over there who had an Iraqi doctor. The difference between Mexico and Iraq is that only the well-off Iraqis can make it this far.

Buttery's a little crowded for my taste on weekends. Another place to hang with a pastry is Hoffman's -- but only after 6 pm, when they have live jazz. You can get a slice of cake for $3.50 or so and hang out in the cafe section and listen to jazz as long as you want.

I listened to the reading of the Declaration of Independence on the NPR morning news show all the way through this year. Not a hard thing to do -- it's a short document, essentially one page. What I'd forgotten was that the way Thomas Jefferson had written and edited the thing was that the last two thirds of it was, basically, this rant against the loathed British monarch (who isn't actually named). A sample: "He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people." Calm down Tom!

Iraq is not conveniently attached to the hip either or there might more diverse day laborers outside of Probuild.

I love The Buttery's poppy seed cake. But I don't go there for the coffee crowd.

I could hear the bombs going off. I'm about 10 miles up into the mountains. No local bombs. Up above Soquel/Aptos -- through the fog. And at Chris's house by Costco, insanity for the few days prior. Bottle rockets whizzing by windows during the night. Bombs bursting in air -- at the twilight's last gleaming.
